The coding region has been updated to extend the N-terminus to one that is more supported by available conservation data and protein homology and there is no experimental evidence to show which translation start site is preferred. The translation initiation codon is well-conserved among mammals but it has a weak Kozak sequence whereas the downstream AUG has a strong Kozak sequence. Due to leaky scanning, although some ribosomes may initiate translation at the upstream AUG, other ribosomes may skip this AUG codon and initiate at the downstream AUG.
