SMARCAL1 (SWI/SNF related, matrix associated, actin dependent regulator of chromatin, subfamily a like 1, also known as HARP) is recruited to stalled replication forks to promote repair and helps restart replication. It plays a role in DNA repair, telomere maintenance and replication fork stability in response to DNA replication stress. Mutations cause Schimke Immunoosseous Dysplasia. SMARCAL1 is part of the DEAD-like helicase superfamily, a diverse family of proteins involved in ATP-dependent RNA or DNA unwinding. This domain contains the ATP-binding region.
