cl00031: ALBUMIN Superfamily
Click on image for an interactive view with Cn3D
Albumin domain, contains five or six internal disulphide bonds; albuminoid superfamily includes alpha-fetoprotein which binds various cations, fatty acids and bilirubin; vitamin D-binding protein which binds to vitamin D, its metabolites, and fatty acids; alpha-albumin which binds water, cations (such as Ca2+, Na+ and K+), fatty acids, hormones, bilirubin and drugs; and afamin of which little is known; these belong to a multigene family with highly conserved intron/exon organization and encoded protein structures; evolutionary comparisons strongly support vitamin D-binding protein as the original gene in this group with subsequent local duplications generating the remaining genes in the cluster
