Assembly chaperone of ribosomal protein L4 and similar proteins; Assembly chaperone of RPL4 (ACL4) acts as a chaperone for the L4 ribosomal subunit, encoded by RPL4A and RPL4B, and is required for hierarchical ribosome assembly. It is required for the soluble expression of newly synthesized RPL4 and for the protection of RPL4 from the Tom1-dependent cellular degradation machinery. ACL4 shields ribosomal protein L4 until timely release and insertion into the pre-ribosome is possible, once ribosomal protein L18 is present.

The gene for this periplasmic protein has been designated orf2 and ybgF. All members of the seed alignment were from unique tol-pal gene regions from completed bacterial genomes. The architecture of this protein is a signal sequence, a low-complexity region usually rich in Asn and Gln, a well-conserved region with tandem repeats that resemble the tetratricopeptide (TPR) repeat, involved in protein-protein interaction.

LcrH, from Yersinia is believed to have a regulatory function in the low-calcium response of the secretion system. The same protein is also known as SycD (SYC = Specific Yop Chaperone) for its chaperone role.
