This work provides insights into the elusive and previously uncharacterized metabolic pathway for the anaerobic degradation of phenanthrene, drawing a picture where bacterial degradation of three-ring polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the absence of oxygen follows mechanistic principles analogous to the degradation of the model compound naphthalene.
