Using DNA microarrays, we analyzed the genomic response of the brain to estradiol, and we identified a transcript, cocaine- and amphetamine-regulated transcript (CART), that is highly induced in the cerebral cortex by estradiol under ischemic conditions. Analysis of ischemic cerebral cortices of ovariectomized animals on a regimen of 1 subcutaneous 17beta-estradiol pellet for 1 week. Ischemia was induced by middle cerebral artery occlusion. Results provide insight into the basis of estrogen's protective effect in experimental cerebral ischemia.
