Transcriptional Profiling Reveals Extraordinary Diversity Among Skeletal Muscle Tissues

(Submitter supplied) Skeletal muscles are a diverse family of highly specialized tissues that perform a wide array of physiological activities and maintain whole-body glucose metabolism and energy homeostasis. Functional diversity is a distinctive feature of muscle tissues, which demonstrate remarkable variability in their speed of contraction, metabolic profile, resistance to fatigue, and regenerative capacity. Unsurprisingly, many disorders of skeletal muscle afflict a remarkably specific subset of tissues, including muscular dystrophies, cancer cachexia, aging sarcopenia, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. more...

Expression profiling of extraocular muscles

(Submitter supplied) The extraocular muscles (EOM) are anatomically and physiologically distinct from other skeletal muscles. EOM are preferentially affected in mitochondrial myopathies, but spared in Duchenne's muscular dystrophy. The anatomical and pathophysiological properties of EOM have been attributed to their unique molecular makeup: an allotype. We used expression profiling to define molecular features of the EOM allotype. more...

Short-term growth hormone treatment on the liver and muscle transcriptome in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss)

(Submitter supplied) Although studies have established that exogenous growth hormone (GH) treatment stimulates growth in fish, its effects on target tissue gene expression are not well characterized. We assessed the effects Posilac® (Monsanto Co., St. Louis, MO), a recombinant bovine somatotropin, on tissue transcript levels. Transcript abundance was measure in liver and muscle using the GRASP 16 K cDNA microarray. A selection of the genes identified as altered with the microarray, and also transcripts for insulin-like growth factors, growth hormone receptors (GHR) and myostatins were measured by realtime PCR in the liver, muscle, brain, kidney, intestine, stomach, gill and heart. more...

Expression data from GRMD skeletal and cardiac muscles

(Submitter supplied) Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is an X-linked genetic disease that affects 1 in 5,000 males. Skeletal muscle wasting occurs early in childhood, while cardiac involvement does not typically surface until a decade later. There is currently no method for predicting which patients will develop cardiomyopathy. The molecular reasons for the differences in timing and progression of cardiac dysfunction compared to skeletal dysfunction are unknown. more...
