Microarray based analysis of temperature and oxidative stress induced messenger RNA in Schistosoma mansoni

(Submitter supplied) The body’s defense against schistosome infection can take many forms. For example, upon developing acute schistosomiasis, patients often have fever coinciding with larval maturation, migration and early oviposition. As the infection becomes established, the parasite comes under oxidative stress generated by the host immune system. The most common treatment for schistosomiasis is the anti-helmenthic drug praziquantel. more...

Determine the extent of inter-species hybridization in adult parasites.

(Submitter supplied) We report the design, fabrication, and validation of a microarray covering the majority of the Schistosoma japonicum and Schistosoma mansoni transcriptomes. The oligonucleotide microarray contains 12,166 S. mansoni and 7055 S. japonicum target sequences. A confidence threshold of 0.001 (P value) was used in all analyses. The cross hybridization potential of the microarray was representative of 10,362 probes detected in both channels, while 12,052 probes hybridised to S. more...

Functional Networks Of Praziquantel-Induced Differentially Expressed Genes In Schistosoma mansoni And Synergy Of Omeprazole And Praziquantel In Vitro Against Adult Worms

(Submitter supplied) Background: Treatment and morbidity control of schistosomiasis relies on a single drug, praziquantel. Therefore, there is a pressing need to explore the effects of PZQ on the parasites at the molecular level and to pursue alternative and/or or synergistic drugs against schistosomiasis. Methodology: We used a custom-designed Schistosoma mansoni oligo-microarray to explore the effects of a sublethal dose of praziquantel on S. more...

Transcriptomic analysis of reduced sensitivity to praziquantel in Schistosoma mansoni

(Submitter supplied) Schistosomiasis is a chronic neglected tropical disease caused by digenetic parasitic flatworms of the genus Schistosoma. The disease is estimated to affect over 206 million people, the majority of whom live in Africa where Schistosoma mansoni and Schistosoma japonicum are the major causative agents. While a number of drugs have been used to treat schistosomiasis, praziquantel (PZQ) is the only one that is widely available, relatively cheap, and easy to use. more...
