Neurotranscriptome profiles of four zebrafish strains

(Submitter supplied) Zebrafish is a model system being used in a variety of basic research and biomedical studies. Understanding the neurotranscriptomic architecture will greatly facilitate and enhance interpretation of research projects. Studies have reported that there are strain and sex-specific behavioral variation particulary in response to stress and anxiety-inducing scenarios. Capitalizing on previously documented behavioral variation by strains and sex of zebrafish, this study seeks to understand the neurotranscriptomic mechanisms potentially underlying this variation. more...

Sex- and gonad-biased gene expression in zebrafish

(Submitter supplied) A microarray study of sex- and gonad-biased gene expression was conducted to determine whether zebrafish demonstrate male-specific patterns consistent with those observed in other animals. We identified a large number of genes (5899) demonstrating statistical differences in transcript abundance between male and female Danio rerio. All sex-biases in gene expression were due to differences between testis and ovary, although differences between male and female body likely went undetected due to constraints imposed by study design and statistical criteria. more...

Identification of sexually dimorphic gene expression in the brain of adult zebrafish (Danio rerio)

(Submitter supplied) Sexual differentiation in vertebrates is initiated during embryogenesis and leads to the development of individuals into phenotypic males or females. The molecular pathways showing sexual dimorphic patterns have been principally investigated in the gonads. In other organs, much less is known about the gender-associated pattern of gene expression. The brain plays a coordinating role on sexual function in both genders including regulation of reproductive development and maturation through the synthesis of neuropeptide hormones and the regulation of sexual behavior in both males and females. more...

Brain transcriptome variation among behaviorally distinct strains of zebrafish (Danio rerio)

(Submitter supplied) Domesticated animal populations often show profound reductions in predator avoidance and fear-related behavior compared to wild populations. These reductions are remarkably consistent and have been observed in a diverse array of taxa including fish, birds, and mammals. Experiments conducted in common environments indicate that these behavioral differences have a genetic basis. In this study, we quantified differences in fear-related behavior between wild and domesticated zebrafish strains and used microarray analysis to identify genes that may be associated with this variation. more...

Using individual coping styles to explain within-population variation in adaptive gene expression

(Submitter supplied) Individual stress coping style has profound effects on how animals respond to environmental change, and individuals within a population strikingly differ in how gene expression shifts in response to challenge. This study used a wild type Zebrafish (Danio rerio) population to: 1) identify and screen for individual coping style using a screening protocol for risk taking in groups and 2) do global transcriptomics of brains from proactive, reactive or randomly chosen individuals (n=10/group) under control conditions. more...

Molecular basis of gender and reproductive status in breeding zebrafish

(Submitter supplied) Sexual reproduction is a complex process involving multiple pathways. In this study, we aimed at investigating gene expression profiles underlying gender specificity in the zebrafish. To do so, we analyzed the transcriptome of the gonads of breeding fish and queried the gene expression profiles for significant differences between the genders and also between stages of gonad development. Major differences in gene expression profiles between genders were encountered at the level of the gonads. more...

Gene expression changes in the female zebrafish (Danio rerio) brain in response to acute exposure to methylmercury

(Submitter supplied) Methylmercury (MeHg) is a potent neurotoxin and endocrine disruptor that accumulates in aquatic systems. Previous studies have shown suppression of hormone levels in both male and female fish, suggesting effects on gonadotropin regulation in the brain. We investigated the gene expression profile in adult female zebrafish whole brain induced by acute (96 hr) MeHg exposure. Fish were exposed by injection to 0 or 0.5 µg MeHg/g. more...

Brain transcriptomic response to social eavesdropping in zebrafish

(Submitter supplied) Public information is widely available at low cost to animals living in social groups. For instance, bystanders may eavesdrop on signaling interactions between conspecifics and use it to adapt their subsequent behavior towards the observed individuals. This social eavesdropping ability is expected to require specialized mechanisms such as social attention, which selects social information available for learning. more...
