Hormones, Genes, and Athleticism: Effect of Androgens on the Avian Muscular Transcriptome

(Submitter supplied) Male vertebrate social displays vary from physically simple to complex, with the latter involving exquisite motor command of the body and appendages. Studies of these displays have, in turn, provided substantial insight into neuromotor mechanisms. The neotropical golden-collared manakin (Manacus vitellinus) has been used previously as a model to investigate intricate motor skills because adult males of this species perform an acrobatic and androgen-dependent courtship display. more...

Expression data from Serinus canaria HVC, RA and Entopallium

(Submitter supplied) Within the overall project, we performed a set of microarrays to validate RNAseq data. In this data set, we compare the expression data of song nuclei to the optical tectrum dissected from adult canaries housed at long day cycles to identify nuclei specific genes.

Levator Ani Satellite Cells (LASCs) treated with Nonsteroidal Androgen Receptor Agonist (NARA)

(Submitter supplied) High regenerative capacity of adult skeletal muscle relies on a self-renewing depot of adult stem cells, termed muscle satellite cells (MSCs). A novel MSC line was isolated from the rat levator ani muscle and termed Levator Ani Satellite Cells (LASCs). Androgen, a known mediator of overall body composition and specifically skeletal muscle mass, has been shown to regulate MSCs. The use of non-steroidal androgen receptor agonists (NARA) aims to retain the beneficial influence of androgen on skeletal muscle, while circumventing undesirable cardiovascular and prostate-related side-effects. more...

Transfection of rat Sertoli cells with human androgen receptor leads to alternated gene expression without androgen incubation

(Submitter supplied) We introduced a full-length human AR into the expression vector pcDNA 6.2 C-EmGFP and transfected AR-deficient rat Sertoli cells (93RS2) by electroporation. We compared gene expression levels of AR-deficient Sertoli cell line (93RS2_noAR) and a full-length-human-AR transfected Sertoli cell line (93RS2_AR17) using microarray analysis.
