Tobacco smoke effect on maternal and fetal cells

Analysis of peripheral blood leukocytes and placenta of pregnant smokers. Umbilical cord blood leukocytes of their newborns also examined. Maternal smoking has a negative effect on all stages of pregnancy. Results provide insight into molecular mechanisms underlying tobacco smoke-related defects.
