Pre-menopausal women exhibit a lower sympathetic outflow and a greater baroreceptor reflex, however molecular mechanisms for the gender differences of AP regulation are still not well understood. Differential susceptibility of Wistar Kyoto and spontaneously hypertensive rats to diesel exhaust particle exposure.

(Submitter supplied) DEP exposure is linked to increases in cardiovascular effects. This effect is enhanced in individuals with pre-existing disease. Animal models of cardiovascular disease are used to study this susceptibility. The heart is rich in mitochondria, which produce high levels of free radicals, leading to inactivation of tricarboxylic acid cycle enzymes. Diesel exhaust particle effect on healthy animals: heart left ventricle

Analysis of heart left ventricle from healthy animals exposed to diesel exhaust (DE) particles. Spontaneously hypertensive animals also examined. DE is linked to cardiovascular impairment. Results suggest DE exposure produces a hypertensive-like cardiac gene expression pattern in healthy animals.
