This bacterium has an absolute requirement for both a porphyrin and an iron source for aerobic growth, and exogenous heme can satisfy both requirements. Heme and iron can be acquired by H. influenzae from free or human protein-bound sources. Analysis of Haemophilus influenzae Rk KW20 cells grown in iron and heme depleted media for 90 minutes followed by growth in iron and heme supplemented media for 20 minutes. H. influenzae requires porphyrin and an iron source for aerobic growth. Results identify genes regulated by iron and heme.

(Submitter supplied) The commercial oligo set for H. influenzae Rd KW20 was purchased from Operon. 548 additional custom 70-mers were designed and synthesized for ORFs unique to/with insufficient sequence similarity to H. influenzae strain 86-028NP. Oligos were resuspended in 2.5xSSC to a final concentration of 25uM and arrayed in quadrupliate at 55% RH, using a Genetix QArray2 arrayer on Corning UltraGAPS slides.
