Herein we identified three spontaneous first-site intragenic suppressors (aR237M, aR237T and aR237S) that fully restore ATP synthase assembly. However, mitochondrial ATP synthesis rate was only partially recovered (40-50% vs wild type yeast).

  2. Although the four studied mutations affected well-conserved residues of the a-subunit, only one of them (8932C>T) had a significant impact on mitochondrial function, due to a less efficient incorporation of the a-subunit into ATP synthase.
