What do the Gene counts indicate?

Gene's statistics site reports the total current records per taxonomy identifier per time period. These numbers should not be interpreted as the number of known functional genes, because Gene also maintains information on gene predictions, pseudogenes, and mapped phenotypes. These records are included in the total.
