Heliothis virescens is an economically important insect pest commonly known as the tobacco budworm. The tobacco budworm is principally a field crop pest, most frequently attacking such crops as tobacco, cotton, alfalfa and soybean. Study of the insect's genome will allow identification of new targets in the search for insecticidal compounds for more selective crop protection controls.
