The nine-banded armadillo,
Dasypus novemcinctus, is found in South and North America. Armadillos are protected by a bony carapace which consists of scapular and pelvic shields separated by 7-11 bands in the mid-section. Armadillos are part of the placental super clade Xenarthra, which was the second placental clade to diverge after Afrotheria.
