NCBI uses the rhesus macaque chromosome naming system proposed by Rogers et al., 2006. This system names the rhesus macaque automosomes in order of decreasing size. An alternative chromosome naming system, proposed by Zimin et al., 2014, is based primarily on homology to human and great ape chromosomes.
The following table summarizes the chromosome homologies according to the naming systems for human, great apes, the Rogers et al. naming system for Macaca mulatta, and the Zimin et al. naming system for Macaca mulatta. NCBI uses the Rogers et al. numbering system for Macaca mulatta Reference Sequence (RefSeq) records and the maps displayed in Map Viewer.
