Perilla frutescens is a perennial plant of the mint family. It has two distinct varieties from east Asia. P. frutescens var. crispa is the aromatic leafy herb that occurs as a red leaf form and a green leaf form. P. frutescens var. frutescens, the oilseed crop, is the source of perilla oil.
