The patient was randomly assigned to treatment with 1000 mg mycophenolate mofetil (MMF), 2 weeks before carotid endarterectomy surgery.

Total RNA molecules were isolated from N=5 consecutive 6 micron thick frozen cross-sections of the endarterectomy sample by using Trizol reagent (Invitrogen), followed by column purification with DNase-I treatment, RNeasy Micro kit (Qiagen).
