organ/tissue: muscle tissue preparation: bulk cell type: normal muscle biopsy of vastus lateralis other information: Needle muscle biopsies were obtained from the vastus lateralis muscles of 8 healthy young men (21-24 yr) under standard conditions. All were screened fro good health and normal neuromuscular function by a panel of laboratory tests and examination by neuromuscular disease specialist. None were involved in weight lifting or extreme levels of aerobic exercise. They were asked to refrain from activities more strenuous than walking for 3 days before the biopsy. They stayed at the University of Rochester GCRC the night before the biopsy, where they received a standard meal. They received a standard breakfast about 90 min before the biopsy. The tissue was removed whitin a few minutes of administration of the local anesthetic (lidocaine). It was quickly frozen in liquid nitrogen, then stored at -70 deg C until RNA extraction.
