Treatment protocol Young adult flies were transferred into fly vials with standard medium. The vials were closed with a fine mesh. The vials containing the flies were placed into the exposure bottle where they were exposed to the vapours of benzene, toluene, or formaldehyde.
Growth protocol Drosophila melanogaster were grown on standard cornmeal–agar medium and young adults (1-2 days) were used in all of the experiments.
Extracted molecule total RNA
Extraction protocol The total RNA was prepared from the exposed and control flies according to the standard protocol of the RNeasy Mini kit (Qiagen, Hilden, Germany).
Label biotin
Label protocol Biotinylated cRNA were prepared according to the standard Affymetrix protocol from 300 ng total RNA (GeneChip® 3’ IVT Express Kit User Manual Affymetrix, P/N 702646 Rev. 1).
 
Hybridization protocol Following fragmentation, 10 ug of cRNA were hybridized for 16 hr at 45C on a GeneChip Drosophila Genome Array. GeneChips were washed and stained in the Affymetrix Fluidics Station 450.
Scan protocol GeneChips were scanned using the Affymetrix GeneChip Array scanner 3000 7G.
Description Gene expression data from Drosophila melanogaster young adults.
Drosophila-Toluene
Data processing Affymetrix data were normalized, and summarized with the robust multi-average (RMA) method implemented in the Affymetrix Expression Console 1.1. To reduce noise for the significance analysis, the probesets called Absent by the MAS5 detection call on all arrays were filtered out.
