By searching for mouse genes encoding a CAMK (see 604998)-type kinase domain, Ohmae et al. (2006) cloned DCLK3, which they called Clr. The deduced 790-amino acid Clr protein has an incomplete doublecortin (DCX; 300121) domain compared with Cl1 (DCLK1; 604742) and Cl2 (DCLK2; 613166), but it has a homologous C-terminal kinase domain. Northern blot analysis detected high Clr expression in mouse brain, liver, and kidney, but not in other tissues examined. In situ hybridization detected Clr expression in forebrain and in the hippocampal CA1 pyramidal cell layer. Clr showed a diffuse cytoplasmic localization in transfected HeLa cells.
By genomic sequence analysis, Ohmae et al. (2006) mapped the DCLK3 gene to chromosome 3p22.3. They mapped the mouse Dclk2 gene to chromosome 9F3.
