FAMILY WITH SEQUENCE SIMILARITY 98, MEMBER B; FAM98B

HGNC Approved Gene Symbol: FAM98B

Cytogenetic location: 15q14     Genomic coordinates (GRCh38): 15:38,454,127-38,487,710 (from NCBI)

TEXT

Description

FAM98B associates with CLE (C14ORF166; 610858), DDX1 (601257), and HSPC117 (RTCB; 613901) in a ribonucleoprotein complex that shuttles RNA between the nucleus and cytosol in a transcription-dependent manner (Perez-Gonzalez et al., 2014).

Gene Function

By mass spectrometric analysis of tryptic peptides that immunoprecipitated with CLE from HEK293T cells, Perez-Gonzalez et al. (2014) identified a protein complex of 220 to 480 kD that included DDX1, HSPC117, and FAM98B, in addition to CLE; the complex also included RNA. Short hairpin RNA-dependent downregulation of CLE in HEK293T cells reduced nuclear and cytosolic accumulation of DDX1, HSPC117, and FAM98B. Overexpression of CLE stabilized the complex in both compartments, and RNase treatment caused partial dissociation of CLE and HSPC117, suggesting that it is a ribonucleoprotein complex. Inhibition of transcription reduced nuclear import of the complex, resulting in the cytosolic accumulation of FAM98B.

Mapping

Hartz (2014) mapped the FAM98B gene to chromosome 15q14 based on an alignment of the FAM98B sequence (GenBank AK095745) with the genomic sequence (GRCh38).
