Productivity improvements in rice

Nutr Rev. 2003 Jun;61(6 Pt 2):S114-6. doi: 10.1301/nr.2003.jun.S114-S116.

Abstract

Rice comprises 23%--an immense proportion-of the calories consumed worldwide. Countries that rely on rice as the main staple often consume up to 60% of their daily calories from this cereal product. During the Green Revolution, the yield potential of rice was greatly improved, which is especially important owing to the rapidly growing population. This article reviews the potential contributions of biotechnology to further rice yield potential.
