We sequenced cDNA libararies from three secretory tissues in five reptile species to identify genetically encoded kairomones. Three species are predatory to mice: Saw-scaled viper (Echis coloratus ), Corn snake (Pantherophis guttatus) and Royal python (Python regius), and two non-predatory: Rough green snake (Opheodrys aestivus) and Leopard gecko (Eublepharis macularius). The tissues were skin, scent gland, and salivary/venom glands. RNA was extracted using a Qiagen RNAeasy kit and standard methods. RNA from each species was multiplexed by tissue and sequenced on the Illumina HiSeq platform.
