SRA Data Updates

Exclamation point Please provide submission ID (SUB#), BioProject's accession(s) (PRJNA#), or SRA accessions (for example, SRR#) in your queries addressed to sra@ncbi.nlm.nih.gov to be served in timely manner.

BIOPROJECT

The BioProject serves as an umbrella for all data submitted to the NCBI for a given research project.

After you have successfully completed your submission, the SRA will send an email notification together with the BioProject accession (in the form of PRJNA#) that you can use to reference your data in your publication(s).

Tack Each BioProject can be associated with more than one submission in SRA and other NCBI databases.

How do I add more samples to my SRA submission in Submission Portal?

A Submission represents a discrete act of depositing data (a transaction). A submission has a temporary non-public ID in the form of SUB#. You cannot add more data to a completed submission. Instead, updates are made to the BioProject.

In order to update your BioProject with new samples and/or SRA data you should create a new SRA submission where you provide the BioProject accession (PRJNA#) of the project you want to update in the appropriate field at the General Info step. This will ensure that all pertinent data are linked to the same accession in Entrez and become searchable by the BioProject's accession across NCBI databases.

How do I add more SRA data to my BioSamples?

Please create new SRA submission in the Submission Portal and on the General Info step indicate (by checking the appropriate radiobutton) that you already have biosamples registered for the data that you are going to submit. After that, the SRA Submission Wizard will bring you directly to the SRA Metadata step.

How I can review and update my SRA data and change the release date of BioProject and associated SRA data?

  • Log into the Submission Portal's Manage Data Interface

  • Find BioProject of interest by browsing, searching, or filtering all your data

    Find BioProject in SRA Data inteface

  • Click the BioProject Accession (PRJNA#) to display the BioProject page.
    BioProject page in Manage Data inteface

The BioProject's page allows you to:

  • generate reviewer's link (for unreleased bioprojects only);
  • edit release date of the BioProject and associated SRA data (for unreleased bioprojects);
  • edit Title, Description, Publications, and Grants for the BioProject;
  • edit most of fields in the SRA metadata.
Exclamation point It may take up to 24 hours for your released submission to be searchable in Entrez. However, it will become public and searchable almost immediately in SRA Run Selector.
Exclamation point If you need to release parts of the data at different times or if the BioProject is already public, please contact SRA staff for assistance at sra@ncbi.nlm.nih.gov.

How do I update Files or Filenames?

After the RUN is fully loaded, neither its files can be replaced nor filenames can be changed. You will have to submit new files in a separate submission using existing BioProject and BioSample accessions in the SRA metadata and request withdrawal of the RUN containing the old files.

How do I update other attributes for my BioProject?

To update other attributes of the BIOPROJECT please contact BioProject staff at bioprojecthelp@ncbi.nlm.nih.gov.

How do I change my BioSample's attributes?

Please contact BioSample staff at biosamplehelp@ncbi.nlm.nih.gov.

How do I withdraw SRA data?

Contact SRA staff for assistance at sra@ncbi.nlm.nih.gov.

When possible, we generally prefer to update an existing submission rather than delete it. If you want to withdraw a submission please provide the submission ID (SUB#) or SRA accession (SRR#) and the specific reason for withdrawal.
SRA follows INSDC policy for withdrawal and suppression requests: http://www.insdc.org/documents/insdc-status-document
