Study: Diversity and evolution of the kelp genus Alaria (Phaeophyceae) based on whole genome sequencing
show Abstracthide Abstract
Kelp provide coastal marine habitat of global significance for biodiversity, commercial practices, and carbon sequestration. Understanding the evolution of kelp and potential for adaptation during an era of climate change is paramount to safeguarding ecosystem and economic services. Whole genome sequencing provides a new frontier towards this understanding. For this project, we are sequencing Alaria sporophytes from across the globe, with the intent of resolving phylogenetic and phylogeographic patterns that remain ambiguous based on amplicon sequencing. Gametophyte cultures from the kobe collection are also being targeted, to build reference genomes in several species.
