Exercise effect on high capacity runners (HCR) and low capacity runners (LCR): skeletal muscle

Analysis of soleus muscle of animals artificially selected for high and low inborn maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) that were subjected to exercise-training. Low VO2max has a strong link to cardiovascular disease (CVD). Results provide insight into molecular mechanisms underlying low VO2max.

Genome-wide gene expression in soleus muscle of rats artificially selected for high and low running capacity

(Submitter supplied) Purpose: Aerobic capacity is a strong predictor of cardiovascular mortality. To determine the relationship between inborn aerobic capacity and soleus gene expression we examined genome-wide gene expression in soleus muscle of rats artificially selected for high and low running capacity (HCR and LCR, respectively) over 16 generations. The artificial selection of LCR caused accumulation of risk factors of cardiovascular disease similar to the metabolic syndrome seen in man, whereas HCR had markedly better cardiac function. more...

Low and High Capacity Runners - Sedentary and Trained: Left Ventricle

(Submitter supplied) Aerobic capacity is a strong predictor of cardiovascular mortality. To determine the relationship between aerobic capacity and cardiac gene expression we examined genome-wide gene expression in hearts of rats artificially selected for high- and low running capacity (HCR and LCR, respectively) over 16 generations. HCR were born with an athletic phenotype, whereas LCR exhibited features of the metabolic syndrome. more...

Hearts from low and high capacity runners with and without exercise training

Analysis of hearts from low (LCRs) and high capacity runners (HCRs) with or without exercise training. Aerobic capacity is a strong predictor of cardiovascular mortality. Results provide insight into the molecular basis for the difference in inborn aerobic capacity in the LCRs and HCRs.

Expression data from rat skeletal muscle

(Submitter supplied) We used old (~96-102 weeks of age) and young (~28-34 weeks of age) rats from HCR and LCR generations 29 and 32, respectively. The study included eight groups; HCR-Old-Exhausted (H-O-E, n=6), HCR-Old-Rest (H-O-R, n=6), HCR-Young-Exhausted (H-Y-E, n=6), HCR- Young -Rest (H-Y-R, n=6), LCR-Old-Exhausted (L-O-E, n=6), LCR-Old-Rest (L-O-R, n=6), LCR-Young-Exhausted (L-Y-E, n=6), and LCR- Young -Rest (L-Y-R, n=6). more...

Skeletal muscle characteristics of inherited low and high aerobic exercise capacity

(Submitter supplied) Epidemiological studies reveal a strong link between low aerobic capacity and metabolic and cardiovascular diseases. Two-way artificial selection of rats based on low and high intrinsic exercise capacity has produced two strains that also differ in risk for metabolic syndrome (Koch LG, Britton SL. Artificial selection for intrinsic aerobic endurance running capacity in rats. Physiol Genomics 5:45-52, 2001). more...

Characterization of the equine skeletal muscle transcriptome identifies novel functional responses to exercise training

(Submitter supplied) Digital gene expression profiling was used to characterize the assembly of genes expressed in equine skeletal muscle and to identify the subset of genes that were differentially expressed following a ten month period of exercise training. The study cohort comprised 7 thoroughbred racehorses from a single training yard. Skeletal muscle biopsies were collected at rest from the gluteus medius at two time points: T1 (unconditioned), (9 +/- 0.5 months old) and T2 (conditioned) (20 +/- 0.7 months old). more...

Impact of exercise training on endothelial transcriptional profiles in healthy swine: A genome-wide microarray analysis

(Submitter supplied) While the salutary effects of exercise training on conduit artery endothelial cells have been reported in animals and humans with cardiovascular risk factors or disease, whether a healthy endothelium is alterable with exercise training is less certain. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of exercise training on transcriptional profiles in normal endothelial cells using a genome-wide microarray analysis. more...
