Treatment protocol MTEC were either mock infected or infected with PR8 (moi=0.3)
Growth protocol Primary cells isolated from tracheas by enzymatic treatment were seeded onto 0.4 μm pore size clear polyester membrane coated with a collagen solution. At confluence, media was removed from the upper chamber to establish an air- liquid interface (ALI). Fully differentiated, 10-14 days-old post ALI cultures were routinely used for experiments.

Extraction protocol RNA was isolated from MTEC cultures by directly lysing the cells in the transwells, using the Qiagen RNeasy mini kit
