Prolactinoma

Analysis of prolactinomas and normal pituitary tissues. Prolactinoma is a benign pituitary tumor that produces excessive prolactin resulting in hyperprolactinemia. Results provide insight into molecular mechanisms underlying the pathogenesis of this pituitary condition.

Human prolactinoma

(Submitter supplied) Human prolactinomas (n=4, 3 males and 1 female) were obtained during trans-sphenoidal surgery as part of an ongoing accession of human pituitary tumors. The study was approved Institutional Review Board (IRB) of Emory University, and informed consent obtained for all subjects. Natural and molecular history of prolactinoma: insights from a Prlr -/- mouse model

(Submitter supplied) Mouse models of prolactinoma can be useful to better understand molecular mechanisms involved in abnormal lactotroph cell proliferation and secretion. We have previously developed a prolactin receptor deficient (Prlr -/-) mouse, in which Prlr -/- females develop large secreting prolactinomas from 12 months of age with a penetrance of 100%, mimicking human aggressive densely granulated macroprolactinoma, a highly secreting subtype.

Effects of diethylstilbestrol (DES) on the anterior pituitary gland of the ACI, Copenhagen and Brown Norway Rat.

(Submitter supplied) Anterior pituitary glands were isolated from 21 week old male rats either untreated or treated for 12 weeks with the synthetic estrogen diethylstilbestrol (DES).
