Mice were individually housing with or without a running wheel for 8 weeks.

Mice were weaned at the age of 4 weeks, and afterwards supplied with standard nutrition until sacrification.

Animals were sacrificed by rapid decapitation without anesthesia. Hippocampal samples were dissected on a chilled glass dish and immediately placed into RNAlater solution (Qiagen, Valencia, CA) and stored at -20ºC until RNA isolation. Hippocampal samples were homogenized and RNA purified with the RNeasy Mini kit (Qiagen, Valencia, CA), then quantified and assessed for purity using a NanoDrop ND-1000 Spectrophotometer (NanoDrop Technologies, Wilmington, DE) and an Agilent 2100 bioanalyzer.
